Samantha Ruiz has a freak gene that makes her turn invisible, or ripple. She can’t control it, and it’s getting worse. Afraid of becoming a lab-rat, Sam keeps her ability secret, until fellow runner Will Baker sees her vanish into thin air. Will promises secrecy and help, and Sam begins to fall in love. Together, the two discover there are worse things than being a scientific curiosity. Someone’s been killing people who possess Sam's gene. A mysterious man from France sends letters that offer hope for safety, but also reveal a sinister connection with Nazi experiments. The more time Sam spends with Will, the less she can imagine life without him. When Sam uncovers secrets from her past, she must choose between keeping Will in her life or keeping Will safe.

My Thoughts

Okay, so maybe there will be one or two more reviews.

Sam: A rippler; a girl born with the ability to turn invisible and walk through objects while she’s at it. She can also move as fast as a race car in rippler mode. The problem is that she has a hard time controlling it.

Will: Another rippler. He’s a sweet, brave, nice guy who stands up for what’s right and that you’ll fall in love with instantly. And hey! He cooks!

Mickie: Will’s funny, smart, responsible older sister. She’s very overprotective of Will and cares a lot for him, although she never wants to admit it. She worked for Dr. Pfeffer, a professor who studied Helmann’s disease and disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

I liked that Will and Sam's relationship develops at a slow pace. Nowadays, YA romances happen in a day or by the end of chapter one (I'm exaggerating on that last part but it's pretty close). They fell in love because the things they had in common brought them together, like their love for running and rippler powers, not because they were soulmates or lifemates or something like that.

Rippler ends with a budding romance, a mystery and a sweet scene that you won’t want to miss! What I loved, loved, LOVED was that the book actually ended with THE END. You should go out and get this book, like now.

  1. Great review. I'm interested. Funny, but I keep seeing the character name of Will in reviews and books I read. It must be the sexy name of the moment.

  4. Hi Jenna! You totally win the tee shirt on this one: Will was THE hot guy name 2-3 years ago when all of us were writing our first drafts. Four months ago, just before the book released, I came soooo close to changing his name because of the bumper-crop of "Wills" in the marketplace. But by that point, I couldn't imagine him having any other name.

Also: a little secret that comes out in Book Two--his real, full name is Willamette, not William or Willem. He and his sister were named by their parents for 2 of the big rivers in western Oregon.

Willamette is a native American name meaning "where the water runs fast and ripples." I discovered that meaning AFTER I'd chosen the name. My jaw literally dropped when a friend showed me the translation of the name. Running fast? Rippling? Are you kidding me? So, as you can see, I felt I needed him to be a Will.

And I love that you noticed!
